			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>During Black History Month, Americans celebrate the invaluable contributions that the African American community has made to the culture and history of this country. This year, the Portage Lake District Library salutes Black History Month with a unique four part film series.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Radio personality of WMPL’s “Yearbook: The 1960’s” and music historian Anthony Daniel will host “Four Musicians That Changed Pop Music Forever.” This Friday night film series spans four decades from the 1940’s through the 1970’s, and each documentary will be represented by an artist who impacted music on a global scale. All films begin at 6:30 p.m. and the schedule is as follows:</p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>Reet, Petite and Gone</em> will be shown on February 3 and stars Louis Jordan, one of the first Rhythm and Blues singers to be accepted by white audiences in the 1940’s.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>Hail, Hail Rock and Roll</em> will be shown on February 10 and tells the story of Chuck Berry, an architect of Rock and Roll in the 1950’s.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>A Film about Jimi Hendrix</em> will be shown on February 17. One of rock’s first documentaries, this film tells the life story of Jimi Hendrix and shows how the electric guitar was never the same once he emerged in the 1960’s.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>Time Will Tell</em> will be shown on February 24. Although it had bubbled for nearly a decade in Jamaica, it was in the 1970’s that reggae music exploded around the world, and the man who delivered its message was Bob Marley. Hear him tell about his life in story and song in this documentary.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Anthony Daniel has a lifelong history of studying rock music and the stories behind the songs. His weekly radio show “Yearbook: The 1960’s,” can be heard on WMPL Radio AM 920 every Saturday from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., or it can be streamed on the internet at <a href="http://www.wmpl920.com/">www.wmpl920.com</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Portage Lake District Library and the Computer Science and Humanities Departments at Michigan Technological University are providing free tutoring at the library for beginning computer users.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>“Online at the Library” will begin on Friday, January 13, and will continue to be held on the second and fourth Fridays of each month. All sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>These help sessions with individual tutors will show participants how to use the internet to keep in touch with people, share pictures and letters, find information, and much more. Participants are welcome to bring their laptop computers if they choose, or they may use the library’s computers. People may attend as many of the sessions as they wish.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Portage Lake District Library will host children’s author and sled dog musher Jackie Winkowski, and mushers Jim Winkowski and Lisa Dietzen for a multimedia presentation on “The Magic of Dog Sledding” on Tuesday, February 21, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Jackie Winkowski will read and show slides from her books <em>Miki’s Challenge, Miki’s Race </em>and <em>Promise of the White Dog</em>. The photo illustrated books tell heartwarming stories inspired by real sled dogs and true events. Winkowski will be accompanied by her lead dog Miki, the main character in two of her books.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Longtime musher Jim Winkowski will be part of the presentation with his lead dog Molly. He will compete in the 6 dog, 35 mile CopperDog 35 race on March 2 in the Keweenaw. The Winkowski’s own Snowy Plains Kennel in Gwinn, Michigan, and offer dog sled rides and events that promote a love for mushing.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Lisa Dietzen is a student at Northern Michigan University and will present videos and photographs about dog sledding and share sources of inspiration that have helped her achieve goals and realize her dreams. Dietzen, who has wanted to be a musher since childhood, has been competing in events throughout the U.P. and hopes to race in the Iditarod someday.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>There will be a book signing and selling after the presentation and books can be autographed with Miki’s paw print. Winkowski’s books are available through Amazon.com and in local businesses, and they can be checked out at the library.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Regular meetings of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange are held on the 3<sup>rd</sup> Monday of each month, September through May, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library. The next meeting will be on February 20, and everyone is invited to participate.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Each month features a different type of food, and February’s meeting will focus on gluten-free salads. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite gluten-free salad and/or salad dressing for sampling and are encouraged to share their recipes. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Please list all ingredients used in making foods that are shared at these meetings and identify the brand names of the gluten-free ingredients. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Participants are also encouraged to bring their former favorite recipes that they want help converting to gluten-free. Help will be available.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is organized by and for those who are interested in or required to follow a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free eating requires the avoidance of all wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Most people find it challenging at first, but are excited to find recipes and foods that are fun and easy to make and tasty to eat. The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is an opportunity to share those great recipes and learn from others. Everyone who is interested in learning more about gluten-free eating is encouraged to attend.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Portage Lake District Library will host its monthly program in the Natural Health and Wellness series on Thursday, February 9, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Richard Featherly will discuss the emotional healing work of Byron Katie and show how we are our own best therapist to resolve difficulties.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Byron Katie’s work has been compared to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy except that there is no therapist. Katie’s work consists of asking four simple questions that help people see beyond their stressful thoughts and recognize choices that alleviate emotional suffering. Featherly will explain how using Byron Katie’s method encourages an awareness of our thoughts and how our thoughts affect our lives.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Portage Lake District Library and the Keweenaw Co-op will co-host a screening of the documentary <em>The Dark Side of Chocolate</em> on Monday, February 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the community room at the library.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>The Dark Side of Chocolate</em> reveals shocking evidence that child and forced labor continue in the cocoa fields for millions of children, nearly a decade after major players in the cocoa industry promised to resolve the problem. This 2010 documentary exposes the ongoing use of child labor, forced labor, and trafficking in the cocoa industry in West Africa.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>There will be a discussion following the film and samples to eat of Fair Trade chocolates made by small companies that show it is possible to eliminate forced labor and child labor from the production of chocolate.</p>
